News

Aug 16, 2010:  Enjoyed a tasty potluck at Anne's home and met some new club members (Tom and Michelle Mahre).  Added them to the club roster on the Yahoo group too.  Shared pictures from July's Westwater, and Gates of Lodore trips.  Got updates on used boat deals. Shared the best news that we finally have 11 lb clear (solid) block ice in Colorado.  Unbelievably it's in Teller County at  the City Market ($1.49/block).  Call or email "Local Ice" company (Jane) at 719-640-2290 to arrange getting ice.  Joe Kallis at RM Rafts might set up an ice chest at his store in Colorado Springs to offer ice block sales for local boaters that don't want to drive up the pass.  This is as good as it gets (comparable to Chevron's ice blocks in Page Az) and the way ice blocks used to be made.  I really hate that crushed ice block junk for long trips.  The Next club meeting will be the permit party in December, more details coming in December.  Several of us off to the Grand for 15 days to enjoy the last desert river trip of the season.  We'll post a trip report when we return!

River Trip Calendar (updated 8/19/10)

Trips will be added and deleted throughout the season as they change or fill up.

July 8 2010:  Updated club members on the recent July 4 weekend Ruby/Horsethief/Westwater trip and upcoming July 15 Gates of Lodore trip.  Pictures from both trips are now posted on our PPRR facebook page.  Announced an Aug 29, 2010 Grand trip (picked up on that day's lottery).  Checked in with boaters for the Arkansas on the weekend of July 17.   Gave away many of the Down River Equip free door prizes.   Next meeting is Aug 16 Potluck at Anne Pierce's home.

May 13 2010:  Enjoyed delicious BBQ at Famous Dave's for our club meeting this month.  Decided to shift the next club meeting (Ark weekend) to June 26/27 (details to come).  Finalized plans for the May Taos Box club trip.  Dolores planned spill  has been revised this week- for a tentative 3 day spill- still remains iffy. Got our club Westwater trip set for July 4 weekend (sorry folks, it's full).  Discussed upcoming Middle Fork trip with a few club members.   Reviewed snowpacks (generally not that great) and current river flows.

Apr 8, 2010:  Enjoyed Free pizza and drinks at RM Rafts new store in Colorado Springs.  RM Rafts is officially open, check out their website for store hours and location. Thanks a bunch to Joe Kallis at RM Rafts for hosting our club meeting, it was fun to see and touch new equipment!  If you want Joe to stock specific rafting equipment, just let him know.  We also gave away a lot of free door prizes (thanks to RM Rafts and Down River) so everyone came away a winner.  Lots of veteran club members and a sprinkling of new members.  I've updated the roster on our discussion database.  We reviewed western snowpack levels and flow levels.  Salt is the place to be right now!  Taos Box will be the next hot spot (I think), mark your calendars for the May Taos Box club trip.  Dolores planned spill looks very iffy this year. Central to N Colorado and Idaho are also poor bets for high flows this year.  Anne Pierce gave us a fresh Salt trip report, flows and weather were great.  Several club members either just got off the Salt river OR were just launching today.   Nick Olsen was on his way to Westwater tomorrow and has already run the Ark at a whopping 200 cfs.  Don't forget to call in on May 4 for our July 4th Westwater permit club trip.  Contact Christina King for details.  Also, let Christina know if you are interested in a Gates of Lodore Green trip in July, we might have space on that trip.  Colorado Rafting bill even made the Wall Street Journal http://tinyurl.com/y3m2sxv

Pat Nolan has posted a boatmen's rummage sale notice for next weekend on our discussion group, I'm sure you can get some equipment deals there. Be sure the review the list.  Our next club meeting will be at Famous Dave's on May 13- arrive before 6 pm to get happy hour prices.  Notified everyone about our new Facebook page, check it out at the link below.

Mar 12, 2010:  Great turnout at our first formal club meeting of the year at La Unica.  In fact, so many attended it was hard to hear and catch up with everyone.  We did our best to conduct a meeting and I know everyone is looking forward to a fun boating season this summer.  We reviewed flows and put-in on the Salt- several club members going down there at the end of this month.  Water should be big on the Salt this year, snowpack keeps increasing- last reading was 246% of normal, high flows last week were 7,000 cfs.  The highest I have run it was 4,000 cfs and that was big and pushy (BUT very fun).  Corkscrew Rapid (right below Quartzite Falls) really was huge at that level.   Taos Box should be good but we noticed that the snowpack readings don't indicate a huge snowfall despite news reports.  Idaho snowpack readings look dismal, I hope March snow patterns improve up north or it will be an early season run on the Middle Fork.  Club members talked about Arkansas weekend trips beginning March 20th?!, Taos Box in May, Westwater (July 4th weekend) and Cataract in September.   I updated the PPRR club roster (on the club discussion Yahoo group).

Thanks again to Down River for providing club members free river "booty" with no-cost (that's right FREE) raffle tickets to about 10 winners at this meeting.  We'll continue to offer FREE raffles at every club meeting until we run out of FREE river booty.  I've got a large box of items donated by Down River, so make sure you come to our next club meeting on April 8th at RM Rafts store in Colorado Springs.  RM Rafts will be hosting a FREE pizza, beer/soda party for all club members at his new local store for our April 8th meeting.  Joe Kallis is offering 15% off of river gear including DRE, NRS, Aire, etc.. items.  Please RSVP to Christina King so we can give Joe Kallis at RM rafts an estimate of how many club members plan to attend so he won't run out of pizza and drinks!  His store is open by appointment until he gets all his inventory in the shop, most of it is in boxes at the moment.  We gave him a club wish list for in-stock items.  Let him know what you'd like to see him stock (so you can touch and feel it) and he'll do his best to have it there.

Dec 12, 2009:  Ava is selling her Five Hive Honey gathered from her own hives. Contact Ava directly for a honey order.  Enjoyed a fun potluck at Barb's home for our annual permit party. A few new members and plenty of long-time members talked about permit and trip plans for 2010.   See the permit planning page for details.  Came up with the idea to upload club member pictures/names so that members can remember names/faces.   I created a Photo album on our Yahoo group that matches names and photos of club members.  I took some photos at the permit party and began also hunting for close ups of members on trips. I'll continue this project over the next month or so but if you want to put your name/face photo in the album, please feel free.  I'd much rather use river photos (close ups) if possible.  Click on our discussion group, select Photos, Club Members album.  Don't forget to fill out your permits and send them in by the January deadlines.  Created a rent/borrow gear space on the For Rent page- check it out.  Next meeting is March 11, 2010.

October 2009:  Be sure to RSVP Barb at 719-599-7909 if you plan to come to the Permit Party.  Also, Ava is selling her Five Hive Honey gathered from her own hives.

Aug 13, 2009:  We had a fun potluck club meeting at Anne's house catching up on all the summer trips (Green, Westwater, Selway, Alaska, etc....). Still have two more trips:  Grand Canyon and Main Salmon (both full) going out late this month.  We will work hard to organize refresher/training trips the remainder of this year into next year for boaters who want to join trips but want experienced boaters to help them along.  Thanks to Anne Pierce for spearheading that effort this year.  We will also work on setting a permit party date by October but in the meantime will plan informal get-togethers via the PPRR club discussion group. Our next formal club meeting will be in December at the Permit Party.

July 8, 2009:  Our June "on the Arkansas river" trips and Memorial weekend Yampa trips were great.  Recent trips over the July 4th holiday included Gates of Lodore and Westwater.  Plenty of fireworks/action during the terrible teens at Westwater including relatively cool weather for this time of year in the desert.  Fun trips.  Lots of recent high water trips on the Arkansas- all sections by many club members.  Anne Pierce organized a beginner trip for Sunday, July 12 on the Arkansas (Texas Creek).

May 14, 2009:  We had a a delightful BBQ dinner on the deck at Famous Dave's tonight.  Lots of talk about recent Grand, Taos Box and Arkansas trips.  Planned for our upcoming Yampa trip.  No takers on Taos Box this weekend from PPRR members but we've got enough interest from Denver (and other) area boaters to make it happen.  Did a quick check of flows this afternoon on some of our favorite rivers this time of year.  Arkansas at Nathrop (1830 cfs), Yampa (11, 800), Taos Box (2650), Middle Fork (4.0- but road to Boundary still blocked by snow), Main Salmon at Corn Creek (3.5 feet, 26,000 at Whitebird), Green (4500), Grand Canyon (7000-12,500), Westwater (26,000), Dolores (2200 BUT releases predicted to be very short in duration) and North Platte (645, kind of a dud choice at the moment).  Snowpack at Taos headwaters is down to 41%- looks like last weekend and this weekend are the top choices if you want to hit peak water on this section of the river.  Arkansas basin at 68%, it might have an early peak also.  I've listed the various trip plans by club members below in the upcoming weeks.  It seems like many of the group are headed in many different directions to run rivers and some haven't gotten their boats unrolled yet.  Hurry up or you'll miss the good water!  Our next club "meeting" isn't until July 8th.  We have an "official" club gathering on the river June 13/14th but no formal club meeting in Colorado Springs in June.  Book your campsite at Ruby asap, reserved sites were dwindling fast!

If you are a rafter and interested in joining a July 3-5 Loma/Westwater/Cisco trip let Christina King know asap.  Still might have some spots open.

Don't forget, for those hanging out on the Arkansas this weekend, it's the River Clean up day on Saturday, get a free lunch in Salida if you officially sign up in BV or Salida and gather trash along the river.

Apr 9, 2009:  Our try at a new location (Henri's- renamed Jorge's in Old Colorado City) was nice and we had a few old & returning members join the regular crowd.  With the recent active weather patterns in the west, not many club members have running rivers much lately and those that have commented on the poor conditions.  Based on the trips at the last meeting, club members joined Ron Baur on his May 4 San Juan trip and others got on an August Grand trip.  It really benefits club members to come to meetings, you get invited on trips much more often once people connect a name, face & personality at a meeting rather than on the internet!  We set plans to call in for a Westwater permit on May 4th for a July 4th permit date.  At the moment we have enough interest to make it for ~16 people if we are lucky enough to get a permit.   The plan would be to run Ruby/Horsethief on Friday, July 3rd (work day holiday for most of us) and then run the Westwater rapids on July 4th, camp below and float out Sunday morning to get back home Sunday night and back to work on Monday.  This entire plan hinges on enough of us trying to call in for a permit (successfully) on May 4th.  I'll send out a discussion group email reminder closer to the date.  We reviewed snowpack levels in the west, not many river basins we typically boat in have great snowpack compared to a month ago.  The Salt river was hard to predict but despite the speculation on flows, a small group of local boaters ended up jumping on good trips with the relatively sporadic good flows.  Overall, there are firm Yampa, Gates of Lodore and Grand trips planned for the summer.  Not too bad.  We can't seem to drum up any interest in going to Idaho this summer, vacation is at a premium.  Our next club meeting is May 14 - right before our traditional planned Taos Box weekend. Hope the snowmelt cooperates on this favorite run.  Don't forget about the Arkansas River Cleanup on May 16, 2009.  If Taos Box flows do not come up, most of us will join the Arkansas river cleanup on that Saturday.

March 12, 2009:  We had a nice turnout at our March meeting at La Unica.  Both long-term and new members rounded out the group.  All sorts of discussion about Salt permits and flow forecasts (most were wrong).  Ron Baur offered up some spots on a May 4 San Juan trip (contact him asap if you are interested).  Bob Tibodeau was unable to attend the meeting but wanted me to pass along that he has a July 22 Deso permit that has slots open also.  Taos Box is coming up and the snowpack looks like it will support good flows this May.  Don't forget about our club Taos Box trip scheduled for May 16- 17, 2009, all are welcome.  Call in plans for the Middle Fork of the Salmon include trying for a week of July 20 date.  There was interest in running a low water Middle Fork trip this year, folks are tired of snow!  Nick Olsen & Pete cooked up a July 4 Westwater weekend trip plan- they'll be calling for a permit.  Our next meeting is April 9, 2009 at a new location, Henri's in Old Colorado City.  Check out the calendar for more details. Just a reminder, if you attend meetings and get to know club members, you get invited on trips (it's as easy as that)!

Dec 13, 2008 Permit Party:  Once again, Barb hosted a great permit party at her home. I've posted photos on our discussion photos folder.  We also finalized the river trip plans- including permit application dates for 2009 on the Permits page.  A couple of items of note; we are applying for a much later Middle Fork of the Salmon date than normal (July)- it would be nice to go when it isn't snowing, Grand lottery opens in Feb for 2010 and club shirts can be purchase anytime of the year (see our For Sale page).  Our 2009 Calendar was also set.  Don't forget the first permits are due by Jan 15, 2009 (Salt River).

Aug 6, 2008:  Enjoyed a tasty potluck BBQ at Anne Pierce's home and checked out river trip tales & photos.

July 10, 2008:  Lots of river trips since our last meeting.  Shared trip reports from the Middle Fork, Gates of Lodore, San Juan, Taos Box, Royal Gorge and of course the Arkansas.  We changed the date of our next meeting to Aug 6- Potluck at Anne's home (map on the Calendar page).   Upcoming trips planned for both the Numbers and the Gorge on remaining weekends in July.  I have also posted recent trip reports on the Stories page.  Still adding photos weekly to both of these new trip reports.

May 15, 2008:  Wow, again we had low turnout at the meeting tonight.  I know some club members are on the river (Deso, Dolores, etc...) as I type but not sure of the river trip plans for other club members not at the meeting.  Despite the few of us in attendance we discussed planning for this weekends Taos Box trip (meet by 8 am at the put-in- ready to shuttle by 9 am) and upcoming Middle Fork trip.  Don't forget that the Westwater club call-in date is Tuesday, May 27 (day after Memorial weekend) for the targeted July 26/27 trip.  The next meeting is June 21/22  for the Arkansas Club weekend. In the meantime, many of us will be running Taos Box, the Arkansas, Dolores, Middle Fork and other great western rivers.

Apr 10, 2008:  We had very low attendance tonight but a few hardy souls showed up.  We talked about snowpack, river flows, May trips (likely Taos Box) and plans for Memorial weekend and the summer.  Nick, Keith, Pete and I shared our Salt trip adventures and photos with those that attended.  The next meeting is May 15, at Famous Dave's.

Mar 13, 2008:  We had a great time discussing western snowpack (=great runoff) and upcoming trips.  Upcoming trips include the Salt, Taos, Westwater, likely Dolores, Gates of Lodore, Arkansas, Middle Fork of the Salmon and numerous Grand trips.  This could be one of those "perfect seasons".  We also adjusted the 2008 Calendar meetings and Arkansas club weekend dates a bit.  Since we got so many permits, we adjusted our Westwater plan for July 2008.  Our club weekend dates were moved from the original Fibark weekend of June 14/15 to June 21/22 because we'll be in Idaho through Fibark weekend.  We also had to change the location of the joint club river weekend (HCRR, PPWC, Colorado Whitewater) because Jim Pike's land is not available this summer.  We shifted the location to Chalk Creek Campground- check out the details at our 2008 Calendar page.  I know everyone is excited to run Taos and the Ark when they come up.   Our next meeting is at South Side Johnny's in Colorado Springs on Apr 10.

FYI- if you come to club meetings you get invited on trips!

Aug 9th, 2007:  We enjoyed a fun BBQ at Anne Pierce's home on Thursday, Aug 9th where we watched photos from recent trips (Gates of Lodore, Idaho (Middle Fork), new Africa photos and Sweden photos.  We plan on having an informal club meeting at La Unica on Sept 21 or 22 to share Grand photos and dinner.  I'll post a firmed up date sometime in Mid-Sept on the discussion group.

July 13, 2007:  We had a fun meeting at La Unica.  Lots of planning discussion about the upcoming Gates of Lodore trip.  Forgot to bring our Westwater photos.  The next meeting is hosted at Anne Pierce's home on Thursday, Aug 9th, bring your own drinks and a dish to share.  Details on the Calendar page.  Hope to see you there, don't forget to bring your favorite photos!

June/July, 2007:  Wow, we had a great time on the joint club weekend - posted photos on the discussion group Joint club weekend 2007 Photos page.  Enjoyed a Westwater trip July 1-3.  Ran trips in the Gorge, Numbers and in Browns on the weekend of June 23rd.  Next meeting is at La Unica on July 11.  Hope to see you there, we'll bring photos.

May 9, 2007:  Enjoyed a new meeting location at Famous Dave's on the north end of Colorado Springs.  Had a new club member come down from Denver.  We shared a trip report from the recent double Westwater trips May 4 and 6.  Westwater trip was fun, weather was awful (cold, rain, hail and snow on the way home), flow was great, drive home epic!   Discussed upcoming Taos Box plans for wekeend of May 19/20 and Middle Fork trip at the end of May (and associated log jam speculation).  Next meeting is on June 16-17 weekend- note details below or on the Calendar page for details.  Updated club roster on the discussion group files.  Best of all, Beth Roren came to the club meeting and brought new babies Katie and Hunter.  They all look great and it's wonderful to see the babies plump and healthy.  A pure delight to see Dave Wimmer rocking away with Katie.  We missed hearing about Dave Sample's recent Grand trip and will look forward to a trip report from him in the near future.

April 11, 2007:  Enjoyed catching up with boaters and their trips. Got trip reports from the following trips; Taos Box runs, Diamond down, upcoming end of April Grand trips, upcoming plans to run Westwater.  Next meeting is on May 9 at Famous Dave's BBQ (north end of Colorado Springs) click on Calendar page for details.  Confirmed joint club trip for weekend of June 16/17 on the Arkansas (see info below).  Updated club roster on the discussion group files.

March 14, 2007:  Enjoyed a fun spring meeting at La Unica, lots of river trip plans and some permits discussed.  Salt permit for April 4th- flow isn't cooperating.  However, Taos came up quickly so plans were made to boat there.  See March 17, 2007 Taos weekend trip pictures at the Photos section on the discussion group page - sunny day, great flow, cold water.  New club list uploaded to discussion group in Files section. Next meeting on April 11, at The Depot, click on Calendar page for details.  Check out our Taos Box page for weekend plans.  Noted adequate flows at Westwater however not much enthusiasm for lower flows combined with cool temps.  Many plan to save Westwater for a warm summer trip.

December 2, 2006 Permit Party:  Despite the snowstorm and slick roads we had a good turnout.  Barb made great green chili and we enjoyed watching DVD's from recent Africa, Grand trips.  We brought a new DVD- Feeding the Dragon- of boating adventures in Idaho and the Grand.  Cascade Outfitters sells it, it's good but relatively short ~30 minutes?  Decided to schedule 2007 meetings on 2nd Wed of the month.   We are open to new meeting locations, if you have suggestions send them to Christina King

October, 2006:  Enjoyed looking at Africa (Zambezi), Grand and Selway trip pictures at the Photo party.  Don't forget about the annual Permit Party on December  2, 2006

Aug 2, 2006:  We had a great time at the Aug club meeting/BBQ thanks to Beth and Eric.  Enjoyed looking at the recent Green trip pictures and hearing about everyone's summer adventures.

July 14, 2006:  Cancelled the Sept meeting/BBQ and moved it to Aug 2 at (6 pm).  Beth and Eric Roren are hosting a club BBQ/potluck at their new home on Aug 2 at 6 pm.  Bring an appetizer, side dish/dessert, your own beverage and river chair.  I'll bring some hamburgers, Beth is will provide bratwursts and she will also make sure to have condiments.  Join us to check out their new home, celebrate the end of the club meeting season for the summer and meet other boaters.  Be sure to bring your favorite photos, stories and boating videos.

July 5, 2006:  Only 6 of us at this meeting at La Unica.  Holiday week and a drenching storm served to make it a small meeting.  However, we had a great Westwater club trip over the July 4 weekend.  Pat let us know that the Upper Colorado trip wasn't going to happen but showed off a picture of her new trailer.  Added club BBQ photos to Yahoo discussion group Photos section.

June 24/25, 2006:  We enjoyed a great weekend club collaboration/boating event.  HCRR and CWWA clubs joined our club for a weekend of boating on the Arkansas.  Jim Pike hosted all the club members for camping and a BBQ on his property adjacent to Ruby Mountain.  We had so much fun, I anticipate a repeat next summer if Jim will host us again.  Next meeting is July 5 at La Unica- 7 pm.

May 3, 2006:  I can tell everyone is getting spring fever by the number of club attendees at our meeting this month.  Discussed upcoming river plans- updated the list below, snowpack levels and river cleanup event.  The next meeting is not until June 24 to be held at Ruby Mountain near Buena Vista on a weekend.

May 1, 2006:  Brandy was adopted!

April 5, 2006:  We had a fun meeting at Giuseppe's Depot with lots of trips discussed.  Added more planned club trips (Green River/Gates of Lodore) to the river trip calendar below. Changed the June meeting date and location to Ruby Mountain (see below or Calendar page for details).  Added a Sept meeting date/location to a potluck/bbq at Beth & Eric's new home (details to be coming).  Next meeting is at on May 3, 2006 at Jose Muldoon's.

Anne our soft-hearted club vet let us know about a great River dog (Brandy) that needs adopting.

March 1, 2006:  Our first meeting of the year at La Unica had a great turnout.  Everyone is in the trip planning mode in anticipation of a good year.  Added some planned club trips to the river trip calendar below.  Next meeting is at on April 5, 2006.

Dec 10, 2005:  We had a great DO Cookoff and Permit Planning party.   I've updated the permit plans we have for 2006 on the Permit Planning page.  Congratulations to Keith Fuqua (Lasagna), Jeff & Karen Hodge (Jalepeno Cornbread) and Christina King (Monkey bread) for winning the donated DO books for their tasty entries.  Also thanks to Down River (our website sponsor), 4 Corners and NRS for donating the prizes to our DO Cookoff club event.  The food brought by everyone was delicious (spicy Thai soup, Green chili, pies, cookies, fudge, etc...).  We set the meeting calendar for 2006, kept the 1st Wed of the month.

Sept 12, 2005:  Postponed DO Cookoff event to Dec 10 Permit Party.

Sept 3, 2005:  Finalized plans for the Sept 17 Dutch Oven Cook-off and potluck.

August 3, 2005: We met at Front Range BBQ in Colorado Springs on Aug 3 despite the torrential downpour of rain (yippee) and enjoyed a fun club meeting watching the rain fall and eating BBQ on our covered porch.  Ann, Joe, Jack, Wendy and Keith gave us updates from recent Main Salmon, Gates of Lodore and Westwater trips.  Note to campers/boaters:  Don't use white gas to get charcoal going!

Upcoming plans:  Next month (September) is our last meeting of the year and I wanted to get input from club members on what we should plan for.  I'd like to plan a September meeting/dutch oven/potluck at Bear Creek Regional Park in Colorado Springs.  There are several ideas "floating" about including; plan it for a weekend or weeknight, later in Sept will be much cooler (current meeting is planned for Sept 7 - Wed night at 7 pm), bring pictures from summer river trips.  I'm open to suggestions to make it the best date/location for everyone and encourage wide club participation.  Suggestions are welcome.  Send your suggestions to Christina King at canyonthedog @ warpdriveonline.com .  I might put a poll out on the discussion group to see what works best for everyone as well.

Recipe books:  We are out of our first batch of printed Recipe books and will review doing another printing if the requests come in to us.  If you want to add some recipes to the next printing please send them to Pat Nolan @ riverphoto at aol.com

Gore Canyon races:  Races are Aug 19 and 20.   See link for detailed information

http://www.rapidpulse.com/gore/05_info.htm

Upcoming river trips:  Plans are in the works for duckying the Numbers this weekend (Aug 6 and/or 7) and duckying the upper Taos Box (involves backpacking/hiking your ducky in quite a ways).    Contact jack @ firstcapitalmortgage.net for more info.  Talk about boating in Mexico this winter as well.  Email Jack also.

July 6, 2005:   This past month has been one river trip after another with Pikes Peak River Runners club members.  We've got club members boating on the Poudre, North Platte, Arkansas, Grand Canyon, Selway, Gates of Lodore, South Fork of the Payette, Boise River, Main Salmon, Upper Colorado, Taylor River and Taos Box.  Quite a selection of western rivers!  We shared some pictures and trip reports.  http://www.pprr.org/Stories/RiverStories.htm .  Upcoming July trips include Westwater and Gates of Lodore.  Contact Jack at jack@firstcapitalmortgage.net if you are interested in joining any trips.

We enjoyed a great meeting location at La Unica this month.  Next month we will meet at Front Range Barbeque (6 instead of 7 pm because they get crowded early) on August 3.  http://www.pprr.org/Calendar.htm

June 1, 2005:   The Pikes Peak River Runners club meeting last night at Old Chicago was fun. We shared trip reports from recent trips to Taos Box, Dolores, San Juan, Pecos River, Grand Canyon and Gates of Lodore (story and photos to be posted in the near future). Enjoyed photos from the San Juan and Gates of Lodore trips. We also discussed the drastic drop in flows on many of the western rivers during the last couple of days from this past week/weekend highs.

Club member plans for the near future include;

  • Royal Gorge on Friday, June 3
  • Taos on Saturday, June 5
  • Browns Canyon on Saturday and Sunday, June 5 & 6
  • Northgate Canyon (North Platte) on June 11/12
  • Several Selway trips for the next two weeks
  • Arkansas weekends of June 18/19 and June 25/26 (Brown’s and Gorge if the water holds up).
  • BBQ on the Ark - July timeframe (likely weekend of July 9/10) - more details to come closer to the date.
  • Main Salmon in July

Meeting locations: shifted next month’s meeting to La Unica at 3317 W. Colorado Ave, 633-7499. Plan on moving the club potluck to the September meeting date. Looking for location ideas for the August meeting location. Next meeting is July 6, 2005 (7 pm) at La Unica in just north of the Safeway on West Colorado Ave in Colorado Springs.

May 4, 2005:   Lots of plans for Taos Box most weekends until Memorial weekend. In April, a large group of us went to see the Imax Mystery of the Nile movie.   It was a wonderful film.   We highly recommend it.  Pat Nolan gave us a San Juan trip report from a recent club trip.  Lots of club members have Idaho, Grand, Taos, San Juan and other river trips planned during the next few months.  Might be a bit quiet in Colorado as club members go to other rivers in our western region.   Next meeting is June 1, 2005 at Old Chicago's restaurant in downtown Colorado Springs.

April 6, 2005:   Great new meeting location (Giuseppe's).  Keith and Dave Sample briefed the group about our recent Salt trip.   Dave Wimmer shared his April 2 Westwater trip with the group (river was running 4,000 cfs) and enjoyed the nice weather.  Dave's group has an interesting run/flip at Westwater's Sock it to Me rapid but all ended up fine. Planned a group trip to Denver to see the Imax Mystery of the Nile movie.   Dave Sample is planning a trip to Taos April 9/10 weekend, HCRR is planning a trip to Taos as well April 16th weekend.  Dolores is running, operating flow plan is at this link. Pat Nolan should have the Pikes Peak River Runners cookbook printed by April 18th.  Pat Nolan will bring them to the next meeting or you can contact her to arrange picking your copy up.  Lots of discussion about upcoming Grand trips by club members.  Next meeting is May 4, 2005.

March 2, 2005:   Great first meeting of the year.  Previewed new Pikes Peak River Runners Cookbook (on For Sale page).  Talked about upcoming San Juan and Salt trips, heard about Dave's Christmas Grand trip, planned Taos Box trips for April/May timeframe.

Dec 24, 2004:   Big Bend trip is cancelled due to marginal weather forecast and low flows.

December 11, 2004 (Permit Party):

We had a great time at the permit party.  We firmed up the permit application and trip plans for 2005.  I posted the 2005 meeting dates on the website as well.  Pat Nolan is looking for more recipes to include in our cookbook.  Photos with dutch ovens in them are especially welcome.  Pat also needs lunch, dessert and appetizer recipes.  Several people are interested in the Big Bend trip (see below).  We are in standby to see what the flow does.  On Dec 12, the flow is at 4.8 feet which is about 380 cfs.  Let the King's know if you are interested in the trip.  We'll make a go/no go decision around Dec 27th.

Sept 2, 2004:  Last meeting of the year until Dec Permit Party.  Trip reports by Schneiders on last weekends Gates of Lodore trip. Nice weather, easy to get cancellations, good water- releasing from Flaming Gorge.  Mid Aug Rio Chama was cancelled due to non-confirmed flow releases.   Turns out the BLM released 600 cfs but the group went and did Parkdale on the Ark instead and had a great time.  Alaska Tatshenshini river update: Bill and Irene's Alaska adventures include a member of their group breaking their arm at the put-in.   The rest of group continued the Tat river trip and had a good time. The Cooke's are really enjoying their long (almost 8 week) trip in Alaska.  Haines has been their favorite town with the Chilkoot trail the most challenging backpack trip.  Several of us enjoyed attending Beth and Eric's August wedding.

Plans for next year include rotating different meeting locations.  Suggestions included; South Side Johnnies, Phantom Canyon, The Depot, BBQ potluck (Aug or Sept) at Bear Creek Regional Park (including a dutch oven class?), ??? send us your suggestions for other locations.  We had a couple of new members show up tonight. Pat Nolan's friend Gordon volunteered to present a river slide show at our Permit party.  Of course, we encourage everyone to bring photos and videos of their river (or other outdoor) adventures to the Permit Party.  Barb again volunteered to host the annual early Dec Permit Party (date TBD).

Upcoming trips:  Labor Day weekend on the Blue.   Contact Dave Sample asap if you want to go to get the details.

August ?: Westwater trip report by Keith Fuqua and Pete.  Upcoming Rio Chama plans were discussed as well.  Sorry, I forgot to take notes.

July 1:  We had a great meeting in the back room at Johnny's.  Dave and Keith brought their laptops and showed off their recent Grand and Idaho trip photos.  Karen gave us a link to her Middle Fork photos.  We also distributed FREE Leave No Trace river corridor boat tags and coupons from Down River, our sponsor.  Upcoming Rio Chama and Westwater plans were discussed as well.

June 23:  Next meeting on July 1 is at South Side Johnny's. A new location for us. We'll hear Middle Fork of the Salmon and Main Salmon trip reports.  We have some new Free Leave No Trace River Corridor cards to give away and coupons to Down River Equipment Company.  I'll bring some new photos from Seidel's on the Arkansas.  Hope to see you there.

May 6 meeting in Woodland Park:  Suggestion was made to have remaining 2004  meetings in Colorado Springs.  Will update the calendar to try this suggestion.

River cleanup news May 15!

March 15, 2004 update from March 4 meeting:  We met at Zak's on a snowy, dark, and slick-road night.  We had very few attendees but those that did attend proved to be hard core boaters.  You have seen some trips posted but mainly we talked about permits and those that have them.   Hint:  It's extremely helpful to attend a meeting if you want to be asked to join a trip.  One major decision we made on March 4, is that Ralph Hofffman is the 2004 groover officer, now all he has to do is pull a permit and ask us!  We decided to abandon the Big Bend trip idea for March as many of us are on the Salt during the next few weeks.  The Salt River flow is up and looks good.  I have updated both the club meeting calendar and the river trip calendar below.

Big News: Used boat sale and swap at Down River Equipment (our website sponsor) on March 26-28.  Call Down River to find out the details.  Also, we have planned a Colorado Springs Pikes Peak River Runners swap/sell event at the April 8th meeting in Colorado Springs.  Bring your used gear and try to sell /swap it.  The April 8th meeting will start at 6 pm rather than 7 pm to see all of the gear!
